Hebrew College is a Jewish studies institution in Newton Centre, Massachusetts. Louis Hurwich, then superintendent of Boston's Bureau of Jewish Education, started it in 1921 as a teacher-training college that taught in Hebrew, with Nissan Touroff as its first dean. It opened in a converted house in Roxbury, later moved to Brookline (early 1950s), and then to Newton around 2001-2002; sources differ on the exact date. A rabbinical school was created in 2003. Today its site lists a residential rabbinical school open to Jewish students and not tied to any particular stream of Judaism, mostly online educational leadership programs including the Master of Jewish Education, a Master's of Jewish Studies, and certificates. Non-degree community courses do not require an admissions application.
