Harris-Stowe State University is a public historically black university in St. Louis, Missouri. It was founded in 1857 as a whites-only normal school run by St. Louis Public Schools, and its roots also include the 1890 Sumner Normal School for African American teachers. The two schools merged after the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision, joined Missouri's state college system in 1979, and became a university in 2005. It sits just east of the Saint Louis University campus and offers 50 majors, minors and certificate programs. It enrolled 1,098 students in fall 2023, and its Hornets compete in the NAIA's American Midwest Conference.
