Hamline University is a private United Methodist university in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on an urban 77-acre campus. It was founded in 1854 as a coeducational institution in Red Wing, Minnesota, and moved to Saint Paul in 1880. It is named for Bishop Leonidas Lent Hamline and is one of five Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities. Wikipedia says it calls itself Minnesota's first university because it was the first in the state to hold classes and confer degrees, and credits it with hosting the first intercollegiate basketball game in 1895. Its Pipers compete in NCAA Division III. Wikipedia cites 2,117 undergraduates and 1,668 graduate students (2017). Hamline adopted a permanent test-optional admission policy in 2022, and its first-year application, using the Hamline Application or Common App, carries no application fee.
