Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University (HBMSU) was established in 2002 as Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University, one of the earlier attempts in the region to build a university around online and technology-enabled learning rather than a traditional physical campus, and it took its current name in 2014 as it repositioned itself as the UAE's first dedicated smart university. Its president is Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, giving the institution direct backing from the emirate's leadership, while the university is led academically by Chancellor Dr Mansoor Al Awar, who has overseen its evolution from an e-learning pioneer into a broader smart-education institution. HBMSU delivers accredited online undergraduate, master's, PhD and professional development programmes through three e-schools covering business and quality management, health and environmental studies, and education, allowing working students across the UAE to study flexibly without attending fixed, in-person classes.
