Gustavus Adolphus College is a private liberal arts college in St. Peter, Minnesota, affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Swedish American minister Eric Norelius founded it in 1862 as Minnesota Elementarskola, a Lutheran parochial school in Red Wing, renamed St. Ansgar's Academy in 1865. The college opened at its current site on October 16, 1876. It is named for King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, and its motto is E Caelo Nobis Vires. Wikipedia lists about 2,100 students and 170 faculty. The annual Nobel Conference began in the mid-1960s. Its Golden Gusties compete in NCAA Division III and the MIAC. The current catalog allows first-year applicants to use the Gustavus Application or the Common App, requires a transcript, and makes test scores optional.
