Gulf Medical University in Ajman began as Gulf Medical College in 1998, founded by Dr Thumbay Moideen of Thumbay Group, initially offering an MBBS programme at a time when the UAE had very few dedicated private medical schools, and later adding a Bachelor of Physiotherapy in 2000 as the college broadened beyond medicine alone. It was formally recognised as a university by decree of the UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research on 10 July 2008, marking its transition from a single medical college into a comprehensive health-sciences institution. Based at Thumbay Medicity in Ajman, a large integrated healthcare and education complex built by the same Thumbay Group, GMU now has seven colleges offering around 50 accredited programmes in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, nursing, medical laboratory sciences, anaesthesia and surgical technology, medical imaging, and healthcare business, giving it one of the broader health-sciences programme ranges in the UAE.
