Grinnell College is a private liberal arts college in Grinnell, Iowa, on a 120-acre campus about halfway between Des Moines and Iowa City. Congregationalists from New England founded it in 1846 as Iowa College in Davenport; it moved to Grinnell and the town's name became official in 1909. It has no religious affiliation today. Wikipedia reports 1,759 students and 223 faculty in fall 2022. The college has an open curriculum in which the First-Year Tutorial is the only core requirement. It practices need-blind admission for U.S. residents and meets full demonstrated need. It was a center of the Social Gospel movement, played the first intercollegiate football game west of the Mississippi in 1889, and in 2022 became the first U.S. undergraduate school with a fully unionized student-worker body. Alumni include Robert Noyce and Gary Cooper.
