Governors State University is a public university in University Park, Illinois, south of Chicago. It was established as a state-supported, upper-division institution on July 17, 1969, when Governor Richard B. Ogilvie signed the enabling bill, and it received its first class of about 500 students in September 1971. For decades it offered only junior-level, senior-level and graduate courses. Beginning with the freshman class of 2014 it became a four-year institution, creating a structured four-year undergraduate program. First-year admission requires a high school diploma or equivalent and official transcripts. For 2025-26, the Illinois Board of Higher Education lists minimum high school subjects of four years of English, three of math, three of lab science, three of social science, and two of fine arts or a foreign language. Students with fewer than 24 college credit hours enter as freshmen. An optional Honors College expects an unweighted GPA of 3.65.
