Goodwin University sits on a riverfront site in East Hartford, Connecticut, a former oil terminal that was cleared of thirty storage tanks and cleaned up with state and federal help. Its roots go back to 1962, when it opened as the Data Institute Business School. It gained nonprofit status and regional accreditation in 2004, state approval for bachelor's degrees in 2008, was known as Goodwin College from 1999 to 2020, and took the name Goodwin University in 2020. In January 2021 Goodwin took over the University of Bridgeport as a subsidiary, which kept its own name and board. Academics sit in three schools: nursing and health professions; business, technology and advanced manufacturing; and applied liberal arts and social sciences. Dental hygiene, respiratory care, occupational therapy assistant and funeral service programmes hold specialised accreditation. Its mascot is the Navigator, and the campus houses three magnet schools.
