Goldsmiths began in 1891 as the Goldsmiths' Technical and Recreative Institute, set up in New Cross by the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths for the industrial and artisan classes of south London. By 1900 it had 7,000 students taking craft, music, language, art and science classes. The University of London acquired it in 1904, when it became Goldsmiths' College. Today it specialises in the arts, design, computing, humanities and social sciences, and its art school dates back to the original 1891 foundation.
