Glasgow Caledonian University was formed on 1 April 1993 by merging The Queen's College, Glasgow and Glasgow Polytechnic, and took its name from Caledonia, the poetic Latin name for Scotland. The Queen's College's records date back to 1875 and the Glasgow School of Cookery; the West End School of Cookery was added in 1878 and the two merged in 1908 as the Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science, which became the Queen's College in 1975. Glasgow College of Technology, founded in 1971, became Glasgow Polytechnic in 1991. The campus is in Cowcaddens, north of the city centre, and there were 22,205 students in 2024/25.
