Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., fixes its founding at January 23, 1789, when John Carroll finalized the purchase of the property where Dahlgren Quadrangle later stood. Construction began in 1788, instruction started around 1791 or 1792, and until 1851 the school used 1788 as its founding date before a catalog copy-edit error was fixed into the official date. It calls itself the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution of higher learning in the United States, and Carroll meant it to be open to students of every religious profession; nearly a fifth of its first-decade students were Protestant. The Jesuits took over its direction after the partial restoration of the order in 1805. Statvoo lists 24,038 students in total, and Niche reports 7,233 full-time undergraduates. Georgetown's Common Data Set puts the 2024-2025 acceptance rate at about 12.9 percent, from 26,131 applicants and 3,374 admitted.
