Fort Valley State University is a public historically Black land-grant university in Fort Valley, in central Georgia. Its university history dates the start to a November 1895 petition that created the Fort Valley High and Industrial School, with John Wesley Davison as first principal. In 1939 that school merged with the State Teachers and Agricultural College of Forsyth to form Fort Valley State College, and the first bachelor's degrees followed in 1941. The Georgia Legislature named it a land-grant institution in 1949, and it became a university on June 12, 1996. It belongs to the University System of Georgia and combines teaching with agricultural research and extension work that serves farmers across the state. U.S. News has ranked it the top public HBCU in Georgia for eight straight years, and enrollment under President Paul Jones reached its highest level since 2013. Jones announced his retirement for June 2026.
