Fort Lewis College in Durango grew out of a U.S. Army post built in Pagosa Springs in 1878, moved to Hesperus in 1880 and turned into a federal Indian boarding school in 1891. Under the 1911 deed that transferred the property to Colorado, the land had to remain a school where Native students could attend tuition free. The college was Fort Lewis A&M College from 1948 to 1964, and in 2025 Heather Shotton became its first Indigenous president. Fall 2024 enrollment was about 3,544, including 3,393 undergraduates, with about 37 percent Native American or Alaska Native and 43 percent first-generation students. The 247-acre campus has a LEED Gold student union. It offers 60 majors, 47 minors and five graduate programmes across Arts and Sciences, the Katz School of Business and Education. The Skyhawks play NCAA Division II in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, and its cycling team won a national title in 2017.
