Florida Southern College is a private college in Lakeland, Florida, affiliated with the United Methodist Church. It began in 1883 as South Florida Institute in Orlando, moved to Leesburg in 1885, was renamed Southern College in 1906, settled in Lakeland in 1922 and took its current name in 1935. In 1938 president Ludd M. Spivey asked Frank Lloyd Wright to plan the campus, and the result is the world's largest single-site collection of Wright architecture, called Child of the Sun. The Moccasins compete in NCAA Division II in the Sunshine State Conference, with scarlet and white colours. Enrollment was about 3,074 students in 2019 data, while a later IPEDS-based listing gives 3,481. Tests are considered but not required, and about 59 percent of applicants are admitted.
