Florida Memorial University is a private, historically Black university in Miami Gardens and the only HBCU in South Florida. Its roots go back to 1879 and the Florida Baptist Institute in Live Oak; a second school, the Florida Baptist Academy, opened in Jacksonville in 1892, and the two merged in 1941 as the Florida Normal and Industrial Memorial Institute in St. Augustine. The school moved to its present South Florida site in 1968. It is one of the thirty-nine member institutions of the United Negro College Fund. The university announced in September 2026 that fall enrollment had reached 2,556 students, the largest in its history and double the previous fall. Freshman applicants are expected to hold a 2.4 high school GPA, an accredited diploma or GED, a transcript, a recommendation letter and a personal statement. The university describes its review as holistic, and students in the top 20 percent of their graduating class who meet course requirements are admitted automatically.
