Florida Institute of Technology was founded in 1958 as Brevard Engineering College to educate professionals working in the US space programme near what is now Kennedy Space Center. It took its current name in 1966, gained accreditation in 1964, created its School of Aeronautics in 1967 and started an Army ROTC programme in 1969. The main campus of about 130 acres is in Melbourne on Florida's Space Coast. Four colleges cover engineering and science, aeronautics, business, and psychology and liberal arts, and about half of students study engineering or science. The university is known for aviation degrees and an ocean engineering department, and it began offering online degrees in 2009. The Panthers compete in NCAA Division II and the Sunshine State Conference in 15 sports, and the men's soccer team won national titles in 1988 and 1991. Fall 2024 enrollment was about 9,863 students, including roughly 4,762 online.
