Florida Gateway College in Lake City began in 1947 as the Columbia Forestry School, which used military buildings left after the Lake City Naval Air Station closed at the end of World War II. It was later taken over by the University of Florida and operated as the Forest Ranger School. In 1961 the state created Lake City Junior College on the old forestry campus as one of 28 two-year institutions in its master plan, starting with fewer than 400 students. Community was added to the name in 1970, and on July 1, 2010 it became Florida Gateway College, reflecting its authority to grant bachelor's degrees as a state college. The college says more than 5,000 students enroll each year, and Wikipedia lists 4,958 students in 2018, including 1,203 dual-enrollment students. Its main campus is in Lake City, in north-central Florida, and it belongs to the Florida College System.
