Florida A&M University was founded on October 3, 1887 as the State Normal College for Colored Students and began classes with 15 students and two instructors. In 1905 its governance moved to the Board of Control, formally marking its status as an institution of higher education. Today it is a public, land-grant member of the State University System of Florida, based in Tallahassee, and is the state's only public historically Black university. Wikipedia describes it as the third-largest HBCU in the country by enrollment. FAMU admits first-time-in-college students who hold an accredited high school diploma with the required academic units, a qualifying cumulative GPA and ACT or SAT scores; it does not accept a certificate of completion, and the admissions office considers whichever test score is more competitive. The journalism division is limited access, asking for a 2.5 GPA and a 1010 SAT or 21 ACT. FAMU also runs the IGNITE transfer pathway through partner Florida colleges.
