Fairfield University is a Jesuit Catholic university in Fairfield, Connecticut, founded on March 17, 1942 as Fairfield University of St. Robert Bellarmine. It opened with an inaugural class of 303 undergraduate men and has since become coeducational, growing into a university with five schools and colleges. Fall 2024 enrollment was 6,864 students, made up of 5,391 undergraduates and 1,473 postgraduates. The Jesuit tradition of liberal education underlies its core curriculum and its sense of identity. Fairfield has become noticeably harder to enter in recent years: the university reported 21,662 applications for the Class of 2030 and a 21 percent admit rate, which it called its most selective cycle to date, compared with a 33 percent rate cited for the Class of 2028. Third-party sites still list older and much higher acceptance figures, so applicants should rely on the university's own numbers when judging their chances.
