Edward Waters University in Jacksonville traces its history to 1866, when the African Methodist Episcopal Church started a school for newly freed Black Floridians, first as the Brown Theological Institute. After financial trouble the school stopped operating for about a decade and reopened in 1883 as the East Florida Conference High School. It took the name Edward Waters College in 1892, honouring the third bishop of the AME Church, and moved to Jacksonville in 1893. A fire destroyed the campus in 1901, and the current Kings Road campus was acquired in 1904. The college moved to university status and began offering its first graduate degree, an MBA. A 2026 report says enrollment recovered to 932 students in 2019 and has since added nearly 350 more. Admission appears open, with acceptance rates estimated at 80 to 85 percent by third-party sites, though prospective students should confirm test and GPA rules with the school.
