Eckerd College was founded in 1958 as Florida Presbyterian College, opened in 1960 and took the name Eckerd College in 1972. It is a private liberal arts college on a 188-acre suburban campus beside Boca Ciega Bay in St. Petersburg, Florida, about three miles from Gulf of Mexico beaches. It keeps a nominal Presbyterian Church (USA) connection without formal ties and is a member of the Annapolis Group. Marine biology is one of its most popular majors, and the college runs the Eckerd College Dolphin Project and the Galbraith Marine Science Laboratory, which pumps in seawater for student research. Eckerd College Search and Rescue is a student-run volunteer team that assists the US Coast Guard in the Tampa Bay area. The Tritons compete in NCAA Division II and the Sunshine State Conference, with 14 varsity teams. Fall 2023 enrollment was 1,986 students, and the college is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
