Eastern Illinois University is a public university in Charleston, Illinois. The state legislature created it in 1895 as the Eastern Illinois Normal School to train teachers for east central Illinois, and the first elected president never began his term, so the second president was the first active one. It became Eastern Illinois State Teachers College in 1921 and Eastern Illinois State College in 1947, and the General Assembly changed the name to Eastern Illinois University in 1957. Enrollment peaked above 11,000 under president David Jorns in 1992-1999, and Wikipedia lists 8,107 students for fall 2025, including 6,731 undergraduates. Without test scores, guaranteed admission needs a 2.8 GPA and college-preparatory coursework, with individual review from 2.5 to 2.79. With scores, the standard path is a 2.5 GPA plus SAT 960 or ACT 18.
