Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic was established by the state in 1889 as the Willimantic State Normal School, first holding classes on the third floor of the Willimantic Savings Institute under principal Arthur B. Morrill. It became Willimantic State Teachers College in 1937, Eastern Connecticut State College in 1967, and Eastern Connecticut State University in 1983. The campus covers 182 acres, split between a historic South Campus, where Burr Hall dates from 1921, a North Campus with the library and student center, and a university sports complex. Spring 2022 enrollment was 4,125 students, almost all of them undergraduates. Eastern offers 41 majors and 65 minors through the School of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education and Professional Studies, plus graduate programmes including applied data science. The Warriors compete in NCAA Division III in the Little East Conference and the baseball team has won five national titles.
