Earlham College is a private Quaker-founded liberal arts college in Richmond, Indiana. It opened in 1847 as the Friends Boarding School, a secondary school for Quaker youth, and became Earlham College in 1859 with the addition of collegiate studies. The name honors Earlham Hall, the English home of Quaker minister Joseph John Gurney, an early supporter. The college retains Quaker values, including consensus decision-making and peace and social-justice themes, within a small residential community. It was an early coeducational college in the United States. Earlham has been test-optional since 2011, and the middle half of enrolled students who submitted scores reported SAT totals of 1170 to 1350. Applicants are reviewed on grades, course rigor, recommendation and essay.
