Durham University was founded in 1832 as a collegiate university, through the efforts of William van Mildert, the last prince bishop of Durham, and the Dean and Chapter. Its first students arrived in 1833 and were housed in the Archdeacon's Inn on Palace Green. University College, the oldest constituent college, has been based in Durham Castle since 1837. Today the university is divided between academic departments and 16 colleges, and it is a member of the Russell Group.
