Dean College is a private college in Franklin, Massachusetts, that traces its history to 1865, when Oliver Dean, a Franklin native, founded the co-educational Dean Academy. Dean donated about nine acres and $125,000 toward construction, and classes began in October 1866 at the local Universalist Church with 44 students. The school was originally intended as a feeder school for Tufts. The main building, Dean Hall, burned in 1872 and was rededicated in 1874. During World War II a junior college was added, and the Academy was phased out in 1957. Dean later became a four-year institution and today offers bachelor's degrees, associate degrees and certificates. It is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. Sources differ on the exact date the junior college became Dean College (1941 on one profile versus the 1990s on another), so the name-change date is not stated here.
