DePaul University is a private Catholic university in Chicago, Illinois, founded by the Vincentians in 1898 and named for the 17th-century French priest Saint Vincent de Paul. It opened for classes in September 1898 as St. Vincent's College, and Peter V. Byrne became first president in January 1899. Leaders re-chartered it as a university in 1907, modeling the charter on the University of Chicago's and allowing laypeople on the board and non-Catholic students, both unusual for Catholic schools then. Illinois approved the charter on December 24, 1907, and women were admitted beginning in 1911. In 1998 DePaul became the largest Catholic university in North America by enrollment. Wikipedia lists 20,637 students for fall 2025. First-year applicants can choose whether to submit ACT or SAT scores, and DePaul reviews applications holistically.
