Daytona State College traces its roots to 1957, when the Florida Legislature created Daytona Beach Junior College. Its Daytona Beach campus occupies ground that was a World War II training site for the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, which housed up to 14,000 WACs at its 1943 peak, and later the Welch Convalescent Center for wounded servicemen. The college began as three divisions run under the Volusia County school system; Volusia County Community College, one of Florida's Black community colleges, merged into it in 1965, and in 1968 the Legislature combined the divisions under a single board of trustees. It became Daytona Beach Community College in 1971 and took the name Daytona State College in 2008 as it moved into workforce baccalaureate degrees. It now lists more than 100 certificate, associate and bachelor's programmes in fields such as healthcare, emergency services, business, education, hospitality, engineering and computer science, along with an Associate of Arts transfer degree.
