Dalton State College sits in Dalton, Georgia, the northwest Georgia city long known for its carpet industry. The University System of Georgia chartered it in 1963 as Dalton Junior College, and classes began in September 1967 with 524 students after local voters backed a bond to pay for the campus. A technical division arrived in 1976, the word Junior was dropped in 1987, and in 1998 the school became a four-year institution under its present name. Today it is a state college in the University System of Georgia that awards certificates, associate degrees and a selection of bachelor's degrees, and it has a strong tie to the surrounding region's workforce. Students commute from Whitfield, Murray and neighbouring counties, and many are first in their families to attend college. The campus is small and suburban, and the school competes in intercollegiate athletics as the Roadrunners.
