Cranfield University's origins lie in the College of Aeronautics, created in 1946 at the former RAF station in Cranfield, Bedfordshire, to support Britain's post-war aviation research. Through the 1950s and 1960s the institution diversified into manufacturing and management, leading to the creation of Cranfield School of Management in 1967. It gained university status in 1969 as Cranfield Institute of Technology, before adopting its current name, Cranfield University, in 1993. Today it operates exclusively as a postgraduate public research university, specialising in science, engineering, design, technology and management, without undergraduate degree programmes.
