It was founded in 1853 as the Iowa Conference Seminary and renamed in 1857 for iron tycoon William Wesley Cornell. It admitted women to all degree programs from the start; Mary Fellows became Iowa's first woman to earn a bachelor's degree in 1858, and Harriette J. Cooke became the first woman in the U.S. to hold a full professorship at equal pay in 1871. It has about 1,033 undergraduates. The college is known for its block plan, in which students take one course at a time in blocks of about three and a half weeks, a system in place since 1978 and now eight blocks per year.
