Connecticut College was chartered in 1911 as Thames College and renamed the Connecticut College for Women within months, created as the state's women's college after Wesleyan University stopped admitting women. It opened to students in September 1915 and went coeducational in 1969, adopting its current name. The campus covers about 750 acres on a hill beside the Thames River in New London and includes the Connecticut College Arboretum, which is open to the public. An honor code dating to 1922 allows self-scheduled, non-proctored final exams. Roughly 1,990 undergraduates were enrolled in 2024, studying 41 majors across 31 departments, with psychology, economics, computer science, government and biological sciences among the most popular. The Camels play NCAA Division III in the NESCAC, and men's soccer won the 2021 national title. A majority of students study abroad at some point.
