Columbus State University is a public university in Columbus, Georgia, and a member institution of the University System of Georgia. It opened in 1958 as Columbus College, a junior college housed in a renovated hosiery mill on Talbotton Road, with roughly three hundred students in its first year. The college moved to a midtown campus in 1963, gained four-year status in 1965 and began offering bachelor's and master's degrees. It was renamed Columbus State University in 1996. The university is governed by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia and follows the system's undergraduate admissions policy, which sets the required high school curriculum and the minimum standards for first-time freshmen. Wikipedia lists enrollment of about 7,600 students for fall 2023. Prospective students apply through the university's undergraduate application, which is the first step listed on its first-time freshman admissions page.
