Columbia College, also called Columbia College of Missouri, was founded in 1851 as Christian Female College. The Missouri Legislature chartered it that January, making it the first women's college west of the Mississippi River to receive a state charter. It was known as Christian College until 1970, when it became coeducational and took its current name. It is a private, nonsectarian college that retains a covenant with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The college is based in Columbia, Missouri, on a 231-acre urban campus with Day and Evening Campuses, and operates locations in nine states, many on military bases. Its Cougars compete in the NAIA's American Midwest Conference.
