Colorado School of Mines sits in Golden, west of Denver, and was founded in 1874 as a territorial school of mining, becoming a state institution when Colorado achieved statehood in 1876. The current name dates to about 1900. Florence Caldwell was its first female graduate in 1898. Almost everything on offer is in STEM: it has 20 undergraduate degree programs and about 100 graduate programs, plus minors in the humanities and social sciences. The school claims the first geophysics department (1926) and the first graduate program in space resources (2018). The 373-acre campus hosts a U.S. Geological Survey facility that houses the National Earthquake Information Center, and the school runs the Edgar Experimental Mine in Idaho Springs. Fall 2025 enrollment was 8,247. Traditions include the M Climb, E-Days and silver diplomas for graduates. The Orediggers play in NCAA Division II in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, and QS ranks Mines first worldwide for mineral and mining engineering.
