Colorado Mesa University began in 1925 as Grand Junction Junior College, opening with a very small first class. It became Mesa College in 1940, started awarding bachelor's degrees in 1974, was renamed Mesa State College in 1988 and gained university status in 2011. The main campus covers about 141 acres in central Grand Junction, with additional sites that include CMU Tech and a regional campus in Montrose. Enrollment was 9,788 in fall 2025, making it the largest university in western Colorado. It lists more than 100 undergraduate programs and 11 postgraduate ones, and an engineering partnership with CU Boulder allows students to finish those degrees in Grand Junction. Its Forensic Investigation Research Station includes a body farm, and a geothermal system heats a number of campus buildings. The Mavericks compete in NCAA Division II in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, and the university declined an invitation to move up to Division I in 2019.
