Colorado College is a private liberal arts college in Colorado Springs, founded in 1874 on land set aside by General William Jackson Palmer. Thomas Nelson Haskell established it as a coeducational school modelled on Oberlin, and it has been nonsectarian since 1907. Katharine Lee Bates was teaching there in 1893 when she wrote the words to America the Beautiful. The roughly 90-acre urban campus sits at the foot of the Front Range, and its defining feature is the Block Plan, under which students take a single course at a time for about three and a half weeks. The college lists 42 majors and more than 30 minors, along with two master's programs in teaching. Most teams play in NCAA Division III, but men's ice hockey competes in Division I in the NCHC and won national titles in 1950 and 1957. Enrollment was about 2,056 in 2025, nearly all of them undergraduates.
