Cleveland State University is a public university in downtown Cleveland. The state authorised it on December 18, 1964 and it opened for classes in 1965 after acquiring Fenn College, a private school operating since 1923. It absorbed the Cleveland-Marshall School of Law in 1969. The campus covers about 85 acres between Interstate 90 and Carnegie Avenue, with Fenn Tower, its most historic building, reused as a residence hall. A 2022 reorganisation produced eight colleges, among them the College of Law, the Mandel Honors College, the Levin College of Public Affairs and Education, the Monte Ahuja College of Business and the Washkewicz College of Engineering. Fall 2025 enrollment was 13,068, of whom 8,761 were undergraduates. The Vikings, formerly the Foxes in the Fenn era, compete in NCAA Division I, mostly in the Horizon League, with 15 varsity sports and a famous 1986 NCAA tournament run as a 14th seed.
