Cleveland Institute of Art is an independent college of art and design in Cleveland's University Circle, founded in 1882. Admissions turn on a portfolio, which the institute asks to hold roughly 12 to 20 of the applicant's strongest recent pieces, favouring fewer, stronger works from about the last two years. Freshmen apply through the Common Application or CIA's own form, with no application fee, and need a recommendation from an art teacher, counselor or someone who knows their art. Standardized tests are optional and skipping them carries no penalty in admission or scholarship decisions. Portfolio grants and scholarships are considered automatically when all materials arrive by March 1. International applicants whose first language is not English can meet the requirement with TOEFL iBT 60, IELTS 5.5 or Duolingo 95. A third-party guide puts the acceptance rate near 56 percent.
