Chipola College sits in Marianna, in the Florida Panhandle, and serves Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty and Washington counties. Its own catalogs say it began in 1946 as a private school and came under state support in 1947, making it the third oldest of Florida's state-supported community colleges. In 1953 the campus moved from the former Graham Army Air Base to its present site beside the Chipola River, and the first permanent buildings were occupied in 1954. Until 2003 the school was called Chipola Junior College; the name changed after the Legislature allowed it to offer selected baccalaureate degrees to meet documented workforce needs in the region. Today it is a public, open-admission member of the Florida College System that combines associate programmes, transfer pathways, certificates and a limited set of bachelor's degrees. Its catalogs reported 3,282 students in regular degree and certificate programmes in 2010-11, so the college has long operated at a modest, community scale.
