Chicago State University started in 1867 as a teacher-training programme in Blue Island, Illinois, with 62 students in its first year, and got a permanent home in 1870 as Cook County Normal School. The Chicago Board of Education took it over in 1897 as Chicago Normal School, and it later became Chicago Normal College and Chicago Teachers College. Illinois assumed control in 1965, it became Chicago State College in 1967 and has been Chicago State University since 1971. It is a public university on the city's far south side. A September 2026 university release reports a 10 percent enrollment increase for fall 2026 and its highest freshman enrollment in 15 years, after Data USA's 2,238 students in 2024. First-year applicants are reviewed on coursework and GPA, test scores are optional, and a Direct Admissions route exists for students with a 2.5 unweighted GPA.
