Charter Oak State College is a public, distance-learning institution headquartered in New Britain, Connecticut. The legislature created its predecessor, the Board for State Academic Awards, in 1973, and authorization in 1974 allowed it to enrol students and award associate degrees. Legislators let it use the title college in 1980 as Charter Oak College, a name chosen to reflect Connecticut's history of self-governance, and in 1992 it became Charter Oak State College to show it belonged to the state's public system. Master's degree authority followed in 2009, and a 2011 reorganisation placed it with the state universities and community colleges under one Board of Regents. The college serves mostly adult learners, with an average student age around 39, and awards associate, bachelor's and master's degrees. It is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education, and one source puts enrollment at about 2,367 students.
