Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science is a private, nonprofit health sciences university in Los Angeles, founded in 1966 to improve health care access in the Watts area after the 1965 unrest. It formally opened in 1970, and in 1973 California Governor Ronald Reagan signed a bill funding it. The university is named for Dr. Charles R. Drew, the Black physician known for blood preservation work, and is described as one of four historically Black medical colleges in the United States. It awards bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees through the College of Medicine, the Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing and the College of Science and Health. The campus is a square mile in Watts-Willowbrook, beside Martin Luther King Jr. Community Hospital. MD applicants apply through AMCAS (school code 876) and must have taken the MCAT.
