Chapman University began on March 4, 1861 as Hesperian College in Woodland, California, opening to coincide with Lincoln's first inauguration. It became Chapman College in 1934, moved to its present home in Orange in 1954, and took the Chapman University name in 1991. It keeps ties to the Disciples of Christ and the United Church of Christ but is secular. Enrollment is about 10,000, with 7,656 undergraduates and 2,345 graduate students. The Panthers compete in NCAA Division III in the SCIAC, and the baseball team won Division III national titles in 2003 and 2019. Its Dodge College of Film and Media Arts was ranked fourth among American film schools by The Hollywood Reporter in 2026, and the Fowler School of Engineering opened in 2019. Chapman has been test-optional since fall 2021.
