Chaminade University of Honolulu is a private Catholic university in Honolulu, Hawaii, run in the Marianist tradition. It opened in 1955 as St. Louis Junior College, a two-year school that welcomed thirty young men in its first class, after Marianists who had been in Hawaii since 1883 and ran Saint Louis School decided to start a college. It became a four-year institution and was renamed Chaminade College in 1957, honoring Father William Joseph Chaminade, the French priest who founded the Marianist order in 1817. Graduate programs arrived in 1977, the same year it took the name Chaminade University of Honolulu. An evening program for adult students was added in 1967. The campus sits on Waialae Avenue in Honolulu. Its current first-year admissions page lists a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 for most programs and a higher bar for nursing applicants, who also need a C or better in Algebra II, Chemistry and Biology.
