Central Connecticut State University in New Britain began in 1849 as the State Normal School to train teachers, which makes it the oldest publicly funded university in Connecticut. It became the Teachers College of Connecticut in 1933, Central Connecticut State College in 1959, and a university in 1983. The suburban campus covers about 165 acres and holds the Elihu Burritt Library and residence halls for up to 2,500 students. Academics are organised into four schools: liberal arts and social sciences, business, education and professional studies, and engineering, science and technology, with graduate programmes and several doctoral degrees. In spring 2025 the university enrolled 10,039 students, 8,287 of them undergraduates. The Blue Devils compete in NCAA Division I, with football at the FCS level in the Northeast Conference, and field 18 varsity sports. The university does not require standardized test scores for admission, though it considers them when submitted.
