California State University, Monterey Bay was built on part of the former Fort Ord Army base, which closed in 1993. The campus was recognised as the 21st CSU campus in 1994, opened with 654 students, and began classes in August 1995; President Clinton attended its inauguration that September. It covers about 1,350 acres across Seaside and Marina, roughly 5 percent of the old base. Fall 2024 enrollment was 7,713, of whom 6,836 were undergraduates. About 48 percent of students are Hispanic, and the university is a Hispanic-Serving Institution. The Otters compete in NCAA Division II in the CCAA. Admission is test-blind through Cal State Apply, with the standard 15 a-g high school courses expected. The university also reports that 72 percent of students receive some financial aid.
