Brunel traces its roots to Borough Road College, established in 1798, and was later shaped by Maria Grey Training College (1878), Shoreditch College of Education (1902), Acton Technical College (1928) and Brunel College of Technology (1957). It gained university status by royal charter in 1966 and is named after the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel. The single-site campus in Uxbridge, west London, is about 20 minutes' walk from the tube station. Brunel pioneered sandwich degrees with paid work placements, and over 95% of its courses offer one. About 18,000 students and 2,500 staff come from more than 150 countries.
