Briar Cliff University is a private Catholic and Franciscan university on a hilltop campus in Sioux City, Iowa, affiliated with the Sisters of St. Francis of Dubuque. Mother Mary Dominica Wieneke and Bishop Edmond Heelan founded it in 1929 as Briar Cliff College, a Catholic women's college, and 25 women began classes in September 1930. The program grew to four years in 1937, men were admitted in 1965, and it became a university on June 1, 2001. It offers over 30 fields of study plus graduate degrees; most students major in business, education or health care. Its nursing programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, and it launched a Doctor of Nurse Practitioner degree in 2013. The Chargers compete in the NAIA Great Plains Athletic Conference.
